New gallery to support promising local artists
LOCAL artists interested in showcasing their work and being part of an exciting new tourism enterprise being established in the region, are invited to become founding members of the King Valley Art Gallery.
Illustrator and printmaker Paul Koulis, who settled in the region with his family three and a half years ago, is the brains behind the initiative to form a cooperative of 12 members, which will be involved in the operation of the gallery.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, ever since we came here,” said Paul, an artist and chef at Whitty Café, who was also GOTAFE apprentice of the year in 2013.
“I’ve had the experience of working in a cooperative gallery in Melbourne and with a bit of planning it works really well.”
Paul said feedback had been really positive since he raised the idea, with a few people already on board, and he hopes to incorporate a range of different art forms into the mix, including locally produced woodwork, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and a variety of visual arts.
The cooperative will work together to operate the gallery, sharing the expenses between them, building their clientele and contributing some hours each week to man the space during opening hours.
The gallery will be located next to the busy Whitty Café, where Paul hopes to draw on the many visitors who travel through the township crossroads to visit the café, hotel and local wineries.
